Inclement Weather Plan: First Tee – West Michigan Weather Policy & Procedure Policy Statement Formalize and implement guidelines for our Lead Coaches regarding inclement weather and its impact on our classes or events. The guidelines are meant to protect our participants, coaches, and parents to the best of our ability. General weather guidelines No class if the temperature is below 45 degrees at the beginning of the class. No class if the temperature is above 95 degrees at the beginning of the class. No class if there is a 60% or greater forecast of a thunderstorm. First Tee Program Director and Area Directors will make the call. We will do our best to make a call at least 1 hour prior to the start of a class/event. If notice is given within 1 hour or less from the start of class, the Lead Coach must arrive at the course to communicate with anyone who may arrive for class. We will hold class if there is light to moderate rain without lightning. Lead Coaches have the authority and are responsible for canceling class due to inclement weather during a class. They may confer with the Program Director or Area Directors if they wish. If classes are to be canceled en masse for any community or multiple locations, the Program Director and Area Directors will communicate the cancelation to participant parents/guardians and golf course contacts. Lead Coaches may be asked to contact their volunteer coaches about class cancellations. When a class is canceled due to inclement weather, we will add one class to the end of the session. Only one class will be made up, regardless of more than one class being canceled within a session. Specific guidelines/procedures 30-30 rule: Once you see lightning, start counting until you hear the thunder. If the intervals are getting closer together and approaching a count of 30 seconds, then it is time to cancel/suspend a class/event and get participants to a safe and covered area. Play must be suspended for at least 30 minutes after the last sound of thunder. Pop up storms (typically more local): These are likely to happen during a class. Lead coach to make the call if class is to be canceled/suspended and to communicate with the Area Director and Program Directors. Lead coach to communicate with parents/guardians/volunteer coaches. If class is over halfway through when a storm comes through, class should be cancelled and parents should be called to come get their participants. If lightning, follow the steps listed below. Thunder and lightning: Postpone or suspend activity if a thunderstorm appears imminent before or during an activity or contest (regardless of whether lightning is seen or thunder heard) until the hazard has passed. Signs of imminent thunderstorm activity are darkening clouds, high winds, and thunder or lightning activity. Seeking a safe structure or location at the first sign of lightning or thunder activity is highly recommended. By the time the flash-to-bang count approaches 30 seconds (or is less than 30 seconds), all individuals should already be inside or should immediately seek a safe structure or location. The primary choice for a safe location from the lightning hazard is any substantial, frequently inhabited building. (Will be different per location. Lead coaches to coordinate a safe location with the local course management). Lead coach to communicate the cancellation to the Area Director and Program Director in case they get calls from parents Standing under a tree is NOT a safe location. Lightning can travel through the root system of trees. Individuals who feel their hair stand on end or skin tingle or hear crackling noises should assume the lightning-safe position (i.e., crouched on the ground, weight on the balls of the feet, feet together, head lowered, and ears covered). Do not lie flat on the ground. |
