he City of Kentwood Parks and Recreation Department offers a robust adaptive recreation program which empowers hundreds of children and adults throughout Michigan with a variety of physical, cognitive, and developmental disabilities. Programs include archery, cycling, bowling, downhill skiing, golf, kayaking, rock climbing, water skiing, as well as dances and social events. This fall and winter, we are looking for volunteers for adaptive bowling and our leisure club! Volunteers must be 18 or older.
Adaptive Bowling Volunteers will assist participants one-on-one to bowl using a ramp, provide prompting for turn taking, cheer on bowlers, and help develop friendships between athletes. Located at AMF Eastbrook Lanes, our adaptive recreation instructors will supervise you. Volunteers should have the knowledge or willingness to learn about physical and cognitive disabilities.
Leisure Club Volunteers will assist young adults with developmental disabilities in evening activities including arts and crafts, community events, dinners at restaurants, games, tours, and other fun outings. Volunteers will help participants feel welcomed, engage with peers, and be successful with each activity. Locations will vary by week and our adaptive recreation instructors will supervise you. Volunteers should have the knowledge or willingness to learn about developmental disabilities.
